Adult Women With ADD Face Daily Challenges
Adult women suffering from ADHD have to deal with daily issues. They often get misdiagnosed and mistreated because many physicians still think of ADD as a condition that affects only boys and men. Many ADD symptoms in females change with hormones. They become more noticeable during puberty, and then decrease when estrogen levels drop during PMS or perimenopausal.
Signs and symptoms
Women who suffer from adult ADD tend to be irritable, impatient, angry and easily irritable and. They tend to take on projects without thinking them through, such as careers and relationships. Many have a high level of sensitivity to rejection, which makes it hard to deal with real or perceived rejection. These women are more likely than women who do not have ADD to engage in risky behaviours, such as early sex or casual sex. They may also have multiple partners, an unprotected pregnancy, and multiple partners. Depression can coexist with or is the result of ADD and must be treated as well. ADD symptoms are more apparent in girls during puberty, PMS, and as estrogen levels decrease during perimenopausal and menopausal changes.

Although ADD symptoms in women are similar to those seen in men, doctors may not recognize the symptoms due to misguided assumptions that ADD is more prevalent in males. Women with ADD tend to be more emotional, particularly during puberty, PMS and during menopausal and perimenopausal hormone levels change. They can become highly impulsive and jump into things with a flurry instead of planning their lives in a controlled manner. Depression often coexists with or is a consequence of the disorder.
